Welcome to my Reeves Genealogy Blog

Hi,

My name is Barry Reeves and I have been researching my family history for over 35 years now. Although my primary focus has been the Reeves surname and its various spellings (Reaves, Reeve, Reeves, Reives, Rives, Ryves, etc). I have also done extensive research on many other surnames in both mine and my wife's family. Some of these names are: Alvis, Anderson, Blaize, Bennett, Dexter, Gollier, Hammond, Hawkins, Kay, Manning, McGee, Miller, Morrison, Overton, Parks, Redfairn, Redfearn, Reynolds, Robinson, Rooker, Rumble, Titman, Walker, Wyatt and Wynne.

My Reeves family line goes back to a Robert Ryves who was born about 1490 in Dorset, England and died in 1551 in Dorset, England. The Ryves family were involved in the Wool trade in southern England and were large landowners in Dorset County. Although the Reeves/Reve/Ryves family can be found in England as far back as the Norman conquest, some Reeves researchers including myself believe that the Dorset branch originated in the Languedoc region of southern France prior to 1450 where the name was spelled Rives. There are many references to the Rives family found in the town of Montaillou, France during the 1200's and 1300's. This Rives family of Montaillou was also in the Wool trade. It is thought they had to leave France due to religious persecution. I suspect there is a direct connection between the Rives family in Montaillou, France and Robert Ryves of Dorset, England, although I have yet to find the connection.

I would enjoy any correspondence with other family researchers on any of the surnames or topics mentioned above.

Regards,
Barry Reeves

Barry, your recent posting, which included the following caught my attention. Here is the part that interested me: "My Reeves family line goes back to a Robert Ryves who was born about 1490 in Dorset, England and died in 1551 in Dorset, England. It is thought they had to leave France due to religious persecution."
The reason for my interest is that I had a recent communication from another researcher who helped me with a grandfather, William Reaves b. circa 1708-1718. She has documentation of him as shown in an excerpt from her email below. She also mentions the Reaves' in France and how they were persecuted when they were JEWS; they fled to England because of this. Do you know anything of the book she mentions? This information seems to follow along the lines of what you posted.

I have been researching Reaves for about 25 years now and just can't get past William, abt 1718 (who I used to think was John[might have been John William or William John]'

Excerpt:
"Hi Hal, My info comes from John's Journal and Stephen's biography. Stephen lists his mother as Elizabeth Purvis.I believe the 1793 comes from William Reaves' father. William Reaves' father was William who married Elizabeth Calloway. His father was William who married Margeret Burgis.I have a book written by a Reaves woman who carries us back to England and France. Our cousin Patrick Reaves says our ancestors were originally French merchants who migrated from France because of the religious persecution they could not endure. They were Jewish. They came to England because Jews were being imprisoned and burned at the stake. They wanted everyone to be Catholic.

I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

Hello Barry

I am working on the Reeves line of my tree and would love to swap information! So far I have got ton to Edward Prothero Reeves born in wales/Dorset England and died in blanden NC. After that point I get confused because records have different kids names dates places and in one case they have a span of 60 years between a mothers children.... Currently I am using familyresearch.com to find records and findagrave.com I'd love to know where else I can get records that are reliable.

Let me know if I can aid your search. Cora

Mary,

Thanks for writing. As for your offer of sharing pictures, the "tiki wiki" software we're using for The Reeves Project really doesn't display pictures well. We tried it some years ago and eventually just gave up and don't add them. But thanks for the offer.

We've also never had a descendant of Brewer Reeves join the Y-DNA project at FtDNA. If you have any Reeves male relatives (they must have the Reeves' surname) who would want to join the Reeves DNA Project and do a Y-DNA test through FtDNA, that would be a tremendous help for identifying Brewer's lineage presumably back to Henry Reeves of Essex VA. www.familytreedna.com

If you'd like to join The Reeves Project and contribute more information about your Reeves' family you can go to www.thereevesproject.org and complete the "join us" form.

Beverly

Subject: Grandfather was Owen Wood Reeves

I have pictures I would love to share if you like to add me I have done dna through ancestry and heritage.

Please help me! My mom was always sick and died at 45. My granddaughter has unknown seizures. Bettie Mae Reeves. Born 1/17/1927. Adopted in Marion County, Indiana. She was told her father died.

Hey Rebecca.
Was Bettie born a reeves or adopted by a reeves? If she was born a reeves and adopted then chances are no one of the reeves would know her or have records of her life. If she was adopted by the reeves family you'd have to find the descendants of her to find anything useful about her personal health because she wouldn't share DNA with us.

As for general health issues among the reeves you will find a great number of problems!!! Diabetes type one and two. A ton of autoimmune diseases like low thyroid ra ms lupus just toss a dart in the autoimmune pool and roll with it... Ms md not sure if any of that helps I don't have a betty that fits your info in my tree either.

Sorry I'm. It much help. But I do know this related or not I'll keep you and your family in my prayers that's the best I can do.

Hi Cora! My mom was a brittle diabetic. Not sure what that is exactly, she died when i was 16. Both of my brothers were diabetic. I found an adoption from an Indianapolis orphanage once that showed that Dana Harmon and Ruth Nolan adopted her when she was 2.Her name was Bettie Mae Reeves and then changed to Betty Marie Nolan. She was born Reeves. The story was that Dan Nolan was her father's mechanic who adopted her when the father died driving in an Indianapolis race. Sounds pretty far-fetched but could be true. She had a half sister who came to visit when I was about 5. She lived in California, her name was Nora.
My granddaughter has alot of autoimmune problems,it started at age 8, she is 19 now. She has been sick for a long time, requiring fluids daily. Also, very tall. Im wondering if that is a Reeves trait. Oh, I found a picture of Joseph Reeves Mason. My brother looked just like him! But Mason? Could a Reeves mother have given birth to my mom? Thanks so much for answering me. No one ever has. And thank you for your prayers.

I wrote the name wrong.
Admiral Joseph Mason Reeves.

My father was tall I think but he died when I was young. His sisters were/are short though. Those 3 are the only Reeves I've ever met the rest never came around. A brittle diebetic means it's hard to regulate.

Hello family. My 18th great grandfather was Sir Robert Ryves 1380-1440. That's as far as I've been able to trace back. My linage runs through Robert Ryves of Ranston 1490-1550 and Captain William Ryves 1636-1695 to America's Virginia then Edmond Reaves 1776-1855 in North carloina. My 3rd great grandfather was William Emory Reaves 1798-1844. Ira Jackson Reeves of Alabama 1866-1938 to my present residence in Arkansas with my grandfather Jacob Walter Reeves 1892-1965. My father Jerry Wayne Reeves Sr 1935-2001 had two sons, myself Jerry Wayne Reeves 1961- and Anthony Steven Reeves 1965-. We keep the linage alive with a son of my own Christopher Jacob Reeves 1992- and my brothers son Hunter Steven Reeves 1989-. I can only pray they have sons as well to carry on this great linage. I do have a public tree on Ancestry.com if anyone would like to see it and if you'd like to merge yours with mine please let me know. Happy Thanksgiving Rives,Ryves,Reaves, Reeves family

After several years, I finally found Jimmie Reeves, a male Reeves relative who agreed to take the DNA test (I paid for it) After telling him my father and his were cousins and friends, he did relent and took the test. I just went in and sent his kit number and password to get the DNA search started. Then, I realized that I had not put my identity anywhere, so I probably wouldn't be notified as to the results. I hope he will be, but I really want to know. I couldn't find anywhere to put in my identity. I only hope Jim will be notified, but I don't know for sure about that.
What do I need to do to let them know I am involved?

Thanks!

I come from the same Robert Ryves descendent (1380), which is as far back as I've found. My uncle has traced Robert's descendents back further and told me the Ryves/Rives are related to King John of England. He is mailing me the tree he has.
